Readmission After Disqualification

To be eligible to apply for Readmission after Disqualification, you must: 

• Enroll as a full-time student (at least 12 units*) elsewhere for two terms away (semesters or quarters), earning B's or better in all courses taken during each term.

• Have received final grades from at least the first term away.
• Complete any other additional requirements stipulated by the College.

*You may qualify for a reduced course load (less than 12 units) while completing terms away if you fall into a few categories such as working 15+ hours a week, registered with DSP, are student parent, and others. For disqualified students requesting a reduced course load during terms away, please complete the Reduced Course Load Request for Disqualified Students Form or meet with an L&S College Adviser.

Other Important Information

• Classes are often taken at a California Community College, but UC Berkeley Summer Session and UC Berkeley Extension may be options.
  • If you choose to take coursework through UC Berkeley Extension’s Concurrent Enrollment program, you will need approval from an L&S College Adviser in order to receive grade points.
• Classes must be UC transferable.
  • You can check if a California Community College is UC transferable by checking out the ASSIST webpage(link is external).
  • Any other types of transfer credit may require additional steps to confirm UC transferability.
• During your terms away, you are encouraged to complete courses that demonstrate progress towards your degree (i.e. courses that satisfy college and intended/alternate major requirements). You should also aim to take mostly 3-4 unit courses.
• If you have completed your Entry Level Writing Requirement, but have not yet completed your Reading & Composition (R&C) Parts A and B requirements, you are strongly encouraged to complete R&C Parts A and B during your terms away and before readmission after disqualification. 
• If you choose to take a summer session or a winter intersession as a term away, you will need to pair it with at least one semester (fall or spring) or one quarter (fall, winter, or spring).
  • Note: the minimum unit load for a summer session or winter intersession is 6 units, instead of 12 units.
• For courses taken through UC Berkeley Summer Sessions and/or UC Berkeley Extension (including UC Berkeley Extension's Concurrent Enrollment program), the Deans' Conference will accept grades of B- or better.
• All registration holds (except the "Academic Status Review" hold) must be cleared by the readmission deadline. This includes financial, medical, library, and academic holds.
• Once you have completed your first term elsewhere, you should make an appointment with an L&S College Adviser in order to prepare for Deans' Conference review.  
• You may be reviewed for readmission after disqualification up to two times. If after the second review your request is denied, the deans will require you to complete both standard terms away before additional readmission after disqualification requests will be forwarded to the Deans’ Conference. 
• You do not attend the Deans' Conference meeting. 

READMISSION AFTER DISqualification SUBMISSION - GOOGLE FORM

You must review and submit the items required in the Readmission after Disqualification Checklist along with the Readmission application to the Google Form (link is provided after meeting with an L&S College Adviser). This should include any documentation you wish to provide. The Deans' Conference will not consider incomplete packets. No late readmission after disqualification requests will be considered.

READMISSION AFTER DISQUALIFICATION - ITEMS NEEDED

• Undergraduate Application for Readmission with application fee (EOP(link is external) may have financial assistance for qualified students).
• Your responses to the “Personal Statement Prompts” in the Readmission after Disqualification Checklist. Please be mindful of the character limits for each response (see the character limits outlined in the checklist document above). 
• Course Report Summary form with all courses taken since disqualification.
• Unofficial transcripts for courses completed away from Berkeley. See The Central Evaluation Unit's Review of Transcripts(link is external) page.  
• If declared, a completed Program Planning Worksheet, (minimum 13 units each semester unless approved for a reduced course load), signed and dated from your Major Adviser no more than 4 months prior to submitting your request.
• If undeclared, completed a Conditions to Declare form, a Major Declaration form, and Program Planning Worksheet, (minimum 13 units each semester unless approved for a reduced course load), signed and dated from your intended Major Adviser no more than 4 months prior to submitting your request.
• If applicable, Confirmation of Final Grade form for each course completed during the first standard term away (applicable when final grades are not yet posted on the unofficial transcript).
• If applicable, proof of enrolled courses for a second standard term away if not already listed on unofficial transcripts (e.g. screenshot of course schedule).
• Change of College petition, if applicable.
• Optional: supporting documentation (for example, letters of support, Assessment of Readiness to Return Form, verification of employment). Please do not send any medical records.

SUGGESTED TIMELINE

Deadlines for submitting completed packets are June 1st for Fall semester readmission and November 1st for Spring semester readmission. No readmission after disqualification requests will be considered after the deadline.

In order to be on time for your Phase I registration appointment, it is strongly recommended to submit your request by the priority deadlines of March 15th for Fall semester readmission and September 15th for Spring semester readmission. Requests will still be accepted after the priority deadlines, but are not guaranteed to result in a Phase I registration appointment. Review the Office of the Registrar’s website for information about Phase I and Phase II enrollment periods. 

Please allow 3-4 weeks after submitting your completed request to receive a decision from the Deans’ Conference. If your request is approved, please allow up to an additional 2 weeks after your readmission payment or waiver has been received for the Office of the Registrar to process your readmission application. Once processed, your enrollment times will be available in CalCentral.

It is possible to graduate while on disqualification status, but only if all remaining degree requirements (i.e. UC, L&S, and major requirements) can be fulfilled without further course work at Berkeley in a Fall or Spring semester.

In this case, the readmission request is only for the purpose of reinstating current student status in order to graduate. Outstanding requirements may be completed with coursework from a different institution (e.g. other UC, CSU, or community college), UC Berkeley Summer Sessions, or UC Berkeley Extension XB or XBW courses.

Note that the senior residence requirement cannot be met through UC Berkeley Extension.​ 

Submitting your Request for Readmission for Graduation Purposes Only

1. Check the Graduation webpage for deadlines to add to the degree list. 
2. Meet with your Undergraduate Major Adviser to check your academic progress to make sure that remaining requirements can be completed without further coursework at UC Berkeley in a Fall or Spring semester.
3. Meet with an L&S College Adviser to check your academic progress to make sure that remaining requirements can be completed without further coursework at UC Berkeley in a Fall or Spring semester. They will also check for your cumulative GPA and determine if your case needs to go through Deans' Conference or not.
4. If you are completing transfer coursework, contact your transfer institution to request your transcript be submitted to UC Berkeley. More information on the Central Evaluation Unit's Submitting and Reviewing Transcripts page(link is external).
