About Sakiya:

How did you get here?

I am originally from Philadelphia. When I embarked on my college journey, my sights were set on a career in dentistry. In my junior year, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in higher education so I could provide support to students in the same ways my academic advisor and various professors supported me. As a first-generation student, having staff and faculty who supported me and uplifted me as a scholar had a profound impact on my relationship with knowledge and higher learning.

After I graduated with my Bachelor's degree, I moved to Louisiana to pursue my Master's degree in Higher Education. While at LSU, I worked as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Residential Life and Education, and later as a Graduate Assistant for the Office of Diversity. Since graduating from LSU, I have served as an academic advisor at Temple University and San Francisco State University. Most recently, I served as a Graduate Admissions Counselor, supporting nurses interested in pursuing advanced practice nursing degrees.

What is your advising philosophy?

My advising philosophy revolves around fostering a nurturing and supportive environment where students feel empowered to seek guidance and assistance. I believe in creating a safe space where students can openly express their concerns, questions, and aspirations without fear of judgment. I empower students to take the lead in their academic and personal development journey. I encourage them to actively participate in the advising process, guiding them through reflection, exploration, and decision-making. By doing so, I aim to cultivate their critical thinking skills, autonomy, and self-confidence.

Ultimately, my goal is to empower students to navigate the complexities of academia and life beyond with confidence and resilience. I find joy in celebrating student successes and milestones, serving as a source of encouragement and motivation throughout each studen's journey. By fostering a collaborative and supportive advising environment, I aim to inspire students to reach their full potential and achieve their goals.
