About Luis

Joined the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising in:
December 2019
Education:
De Anza College- A.A Liberal Arts
UC Davis- B.A Sociology (Law & Society) Minor in Chicana/o Studies
M.A Higher Education & Student Affairs
How did you get here?
I always did volunteer work working with students but I never really thought about doing it as a career. It wasn't until I did a student outreach job at Davis where I found that passion to work with students. While interning at the CLSD office at Cal during grad school, I knew that this was a place for me to work, to grow and could see myself here. I applied and here I am!
What is your approach to advising?
Meeting students where they are at, hearing them out, and finding best approaches in being student-centered. As an undergrad, I felt that some staff were just there to advise but not understand students and where they are coming from. I genuinely like to build and connect with my students.
What advice do you have for L&S students in general?
You are not behind! Be kind to yourself and go at your own pace. College is not a time to rush, but to grow and discover yourself! Seek discomfort, do what you love and love what you do.
Most unusual job you ever had?
Nothing unusual, but I used to be a bartender, busser, server, and restaurant janitor for some time before going into education.
About me:
I love football (soccer) with a passion, boxing, exercising, hanging out with friends and family, reading, watching anime, video games, shoes, and I am a food connoisseur.
