About Kelsey
Joined the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising: February 2024
How did you get here?
I worked in international education and as a bilingual elementary school teacher before coming to Cal in 2020, where I have worked in New Student Services, the bridges Multicultural Resource Center, and now L&S Advising. I believe deeply in the power of student voices, because I once was a student who felt unheard. One of my proudest accomplishments as an undergraduate was assembling the coalition that established Haverford College’s Pan Asian Resource Center, which has been continuously operated by students since 2016. I owe so much to the staff who supported our vision and helped us create our own home on campus, and strive to pay that care and expertise forward to my students today.
What is your advising philosophy?
I take a collaborative and transparent approach to advising. I want to learn about your ideas, goals, and dreams just as much as I want to hear your critiques, frustrations, and challenges. Most of all, I welcome questions, whether they are about small technical issues or big existential reflections. My goal is for you to leave our advising appointments feeling supported in the many ways that you are growing here at Cal.
Having previously worked on the Student Affairs side of UC Berkeley, I also feel strongly about helping students take advantage of the different resources here, from Basic Needs support to career development opportunities. I am always happy to chat about this in our appointment in addition to discussing your academic progress.
What advice do you have?
You are enough just as you are! And you have the power to grow and change. It is so hard to navigate this tension between appreciating all that we have already done, and seeking to become more fulfilled versions of ourselves. I hope that you take time to explore the balance that works best for you. And, when that equilibrium is hard to find, you have so many people in your corner—including all of us at L&S Advising—whom you can lean on.
A little bit more about me...
I was born and raised in the Bay Area (go Warriors!) and am happy to be home after living in Pennsylvania, China, and Taiwan. I am active in several Asian American advocacy organizations and love learning from the elders and storytellers in my community.
