What is your approach to advising?
My philosophy in advising is student centered which means the student drives the process. My philosophy is also holistic in that I look for positives that can add to each student’s academic life. I highlight their strengths and we explore their unique set of talents. We all have them and I love discussing the positive impact that we could make on this world. I love people and that shines through in my academic advising approach.
How did you get here?
My journey started in a land far from here, in Kandahar, Afghanistan. By age 7, I was navigating an entire new world and learning to speak a language that sounded foreign! Fast forward to a college freshman who was confused and delighted by education. I started as a Mathematics major then transitioned into Pre-Med, then came Physics. After many areas, I settled on my interest in Psychology. A decade later, I returned to pursue a master’s degree in college counseling as I had realized that students and their journeys in education meant a lot to me. I graduated in 2013 and began counseling at Berkeley City College and Los Medanos College. I love the space that I hold for my students and I look forward to meeting new amazing people everyday! My students make my everyday a wonderful day.
What advice do you have for L&S students in general?
1. Be yourself. Be silly and explore. Don’t worry about what you will do with your career just yet. Just take classes that interest you and give it your best. In the end, it will come together. It always does!
2. Find your tribe! Your people can make this journey a meaningful one.
3. Come to us at L&S! We are here for YOU!
