What is your approach to advising?
My advising philosophy is deeply rooted in compassion, empathy, inclusivity and care. I understand firsthand the unique challenges and barriers that many students face and I am committed to providing a supportive and nurturing environment where every student feels valued and understood. My approach prioritizes listening actively to individual experiences and needs, recognizing diverse backgrounds and aspirations. By fostering an inclusive atmosphere, I aim to empower you to navigate your academic journeys with confidence, offering guidance and encouragement tailored to your personal and cultural contexts. My goal is to build meaningful relationships that not only support academic success, but also contribute to a holistic sense of belonging and achievement.
How did you get here?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved school. My parents and family also instilled in me a love of learning, especially since they were not able to complete their studies in Nicaragua due to civil war and poverty in the 1970s-80s. In school, I especially enjoyed writing and reading which led to deciding to double major in English and Spanish in my undergraduate studies. During my first year of college, I met a professor who would become my mentor and inspired me to become a college professor, hence why I decided to pursue a PhD. This professor was Latinx and first-generation, just like me, and he really expanded my perspective as to what I could achieve professionally as a first-gen Central American woman. At UC Berkeley during my graduate program, I got to teach lower division Spanish courses and absolutely loved interacting with the diverse student population here! As I neared the completion of the PhD, I realized I desired to step out of the classroom and guide students in a slightly different way, nevertheless still making an impact on their academic journeys. I'm incredibly happy to continue on the Berkeley campus now as an L&S adviser!
What advice do you have for L&S students in general?
Never hesitate to ask for help as many times as needed. Take advantage of all of the resources available to you on the Berkeley campus, whether that be reaching out to staff like myself or accessing programs. You are not alone and we are here to support you! Also, be patient and kind to yourself as you navigate new experiences, discover your changing interests and grow not only as a student but as an individual. Last, your existence on this campus and in the world matters! You belong here.
About me
I grew up in Oakland, CA and Nicaragua, so I consider both places as home. I was the first in my family to be born in the USA. I am very family-oriented, love to travel and workout, and am the proud dog parent of a sweet maltipoo named Dewie :)
