Initial Transfer Credit Review

Initial Transfer Credit Review for New Students

Welcome to UC Berkeley!

Before and during your first semester, UC Berkeley's Central Evaluation Unit (CEU), along with the College of Letters and Science, will perform an initial review of your transfer credit coursework. This review is complete in two parts.

Part 1:

The Central Evaluation Unit will perform an initial transfer credit review of all credit-bearing exams (e.g. AP, IB, GCE A-Level), high school transcripts, and transcripts from other colleges that you have submitted as part of meeting your conditions of admission.

CEU’s initial review is typically completed by:

  • the end of December for students admitted in the Fall
  • mid-February for students admitted in the Spring

Transfer credits will be posted in stages, and some may stay "Under Review" during your first two semesters. You can still enroll in courses before all transfer credits are finalized. California Community College courses transfer per the Assist.org agreements.

Part 2:

Once the CEU completes its review, the College of Letters and Science will evaluate your transfer credits to see if they satisfy Seven-Course Breadth and the L&S Language Requirement. Only the courses listed on your official transfer credit review will be considered.

Students admitted before Fall 2027 will be reviewed for Seven-Course Breadth, L&S Language Requirement, and Quantitative Reasoning.

Students admitted in Fall 2027 and later will be evaluated for Seven-Course Breadth and the L&S Language Requirement. The College will not evaluate for Quantitative Reasoning, and the student should refer to the course equivalency process of the relevant UC Berkeley department (Math, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science).

Initial Transfer Credit Review FAQ

How do I know if L&S has completed my review?

You will receive a confirmation email from lnstransfercreditreview@berkeley.edu once your review is complete. This email will also include instructions on reviewing your Academic Progress Report (APR) and how to submit additional transfer work for review.

What resources are available to me?

Explore the resources available through L&S, such as the Academic Planning webpage, to help guide your progress.

Who do I contact if I need assistance with course selection while my initial review is pending?

Both your L&S College Adviser and Undergraduate Major Adviser are available to assist you with class scheduling while your review is in progress. You can learn more about scheduling an appointment via the Appointments and Advice webpage.

What to do if you still have missing credit after the Initial Transfer Credit Review?

After the initial transfer credit review is complete, open a case with Cal Student Central for any questions or concerns about missing units or credit for Entry Level Writing, American History and Institutions, or American Cultures.

For transfer work from a non-California community college, allow a few more weeks for review of this credit. Once your credit review is complete, check your Academic Progress Report. If you received units for a course but did not receive Essential Skills or Breadth credit and wish to have your work evaluated for these general education requirements, see our Transfer Coursework: Other Higher Education Institutions webpage to learn how to petition these requirements.

Please do not submit petitions to evaluate transfer credit until your Initial Transfer Credit Review is completed.
