Initial Transfer Credit Review

Initial Transfer Credit Review for New Students

Welcome to UC Berkeley!

Before and during your first semester at UC Berkeley, the campus’s Central Evaluation Unit will perform an initial transfer credit review. All credit-bearing exams (e.g. AP, IB, GCE A-Level), high school transcripts, and transcripts from other colleges that you have submitted as part of meeting your conditions of Admissions outlined in your Cal Central checklist  will be reviewed during this process. This initial review is typically completed by:

  • the end of December for students admitted in the Fall
  • mid-February for students admitted in the Spring

This means that you will likely not have all of your transfer credit reviewed by the time you enroll in courses for your first semester or two.

Transfer work and test scores will be posted to your CalCentral in stages during this processThis means you may see some requirements being marked as satisfied while other are still "Under Review."

Transfer work from California Community Colleges will be transferred based on assist.org agreements.

How you'll prepare your first semester schedule

Golden Bear Advising, our online orientation, will guide you in assessing your incoming work and connects you to academic advisers (L&S College Advisers for incoming freshmen, Undergraduate Major Advisers for incoming transfers) who can help you make judgments about how your transfer credit may influence your decisions about your first semester schedule.

What to do if you still have missing credit after the Initial Transfer Credit Review?

After the initial transfer credit review is complete, open a case with Cal Student Central for any questions or concerns about missing units or credit for Entry Level Writing, American History and Institutions or American Cultures.

For transfer work from a non-California community college: allow a few more weeks for review of this credit. Once your credit review is complete, check your Academic Progress Report. If you received units for a course but did not receive Essential Skills or Breadth credit and wish to have your work evaluated for these general education requirements, see our Transfer Coursework: Other Higher Education Institutions page to learn how to petition these requirements. Do not submit petitions to evaluate transfer credit until your Initial Transfer Credit Review is completed.
