Welcome to the Arts & Humanities Advising Neighborhood!
The Arts & Humanities Advising Neighborhood is made up of all majors in the Arts & Humanities division. You can find a full list of departments in this neighborhood in the table further down this page.
Your advising neighborhood includes L&S College Advisers and Undergraduate Major Advisers. While these advisers answer different questions (see the diagram below), they work together to make sure you receive a consistent advising experience.
Sometimes you will need to see both advisers for questions that impact both general and major requirements (such as creating a thorough program plan).
Still unsure which adviser is the best fit for your question?
We're here to help! Visit our Virtual Front Desk for real-time support.
L&S College Advisers help with questions about L&S College policies and procedures, such as the topics found on this website. Being part of this advising neighborhood helps us be aware of your major when advising you on these policies. Here is a list of common topics you would discuss with your L&S College Adviser:
- Satisfying your non-major degree requirements
- Choosing a major or minor
- Exploring transfer work options for non-major requirements
- Clarifying academic options if you are struggling with a class
- Incorporating college requirements and enrichment opportunities to a 4-year plan
- Connecting with campus resources for support

Major advisers help with questions related to major requirements or planning that are more in depth. Here are some common topics you would discuss with your Undergraduate Major Adviser instead of your L&S College Adviser:
- Satisfying major prerequisites and upper division requirements
- Declaring or applying to the major and likelihood of admission
- Exploring transfer work options for major requirements
- Discussing how struggling in a major course may impact major progress
- Developing your major program plan and discussing whether a major is feasible with your remaining time
- Learning about research and other departmental opportunities
Tip: For basic policy information or an overview of the major, please first review your intended or declared major's website to see if your question is answered.

What if I'm a double (or multiple) major?
Students with multiple majors will need to work with both of their undergraduate major advisers to plan each major during their time at Cal.
If you are intending majors in two (or more) different neighborhoods, you do not need to meet with L&S College Advisers from both neighborhoods.
If you have one major that has more planning challenges, is more related to future career, or that you tend to have more questions about, we recommend working with the L&S College Advisers in that major's neighborhood.
Otherwise, you are welcome to find an L&S College Adviser in either of your major's neighborhoods that you enjoy working with and continue working with that adviser (or you may search for the first L&S College Adviser available in either one of your neighborhoods).
Who do I meet with for Minor questions?
Minor questions always go to the advisers in your minor department. They will help you declare and determine minor progress.
Only your intended/declared major is needed to find your Advising Neighborhood. You will not need to meet with an L&S College Adviser in the neighborhood for your minor.
What if I don't know which major I want to do?
If you are exploring majors within the Arts & Humanities neighborhood, it's helpful to start with meeting with an L&S College Adviser in this neighborhood.
If you are exploring majors in different neighborhoods, see our Undecided Students page.
Do I have to meet with an L&S College Adviser from my neighborhood?
No! The advantage of meeting with an L&S College Adviser in your neighborhood is that they will have a greater understanding about your intended/declared major department and can answer other questions through that lens. But all L&S College Advisers can advise you on policies, progress toward non-major requirements, academic difficulty, etc.
If you have worked with an L&S College Adviser you like or want to pursue a recommendation from a friend, you are welcome to work with any L&S College Adviser. Just be aware that L&S College Advisers outside of your neighborhood will have less of a thorough understanding of your intended major.
I'm having trouble getting in touch with an L&S College Adviser in my neighborhood.
At certain times of the semester, advising appointments can book out significantly. We know how frustrating that can be.
If you are having trouble getting in touch or scheduling an appointment with an L&S College Adviser in your neighborhood, contact our intake staff. They can listen to your question and help guide you on next steps. They may even be able to answer your question.
